Handyperson Service

Working in partnership with Wigan Borough AgeUK, Wigan Borough Care & Repair provides a Handyperson service. We can offer help with small repairs and DIY jobs around the home.

The kinds of small jobs and repairs that our Handyperson can do for you include the following (but this is not an exhaustive list):

  • Limited brickwork and patch plastering
  • Gates & fences (repair, replacing broken hinges, fitting padbolts and padlocks)
  • Fitting curtain rails and blinds and replacing light bulbs
  • Drainage works (e.g. unblocking sinks or gullies) and small heating and plumbing issues (e.g. bleeding radiators, replacing taps and tightening washers, small repairs to leaking pipes)
  • Internal joinery (e.g. replacing doors, erecting shelving and re-fixing loose floorboards) and furniture moving/repair (and small flat pack assembly)

The cost is just £15 per visit plus the cost of any materials used. We will source the materials for you if you are unsure what’s needed for the job. The Handyperson can only deal with the work that is on their job sheet. (For example, if you have reported a leaky tap the Handyperson cannot then attend to putting up a shelf as well – another appointment will have to be made.)

The Handyperson service is available to Wigan Borough residents who are aged over 60 or who are disabled, regardless of income or tenure. (However, if you are in rented accommodation we will not be able to carry out any work that is the responsibility of your landlord.) The Handyperson service is available as many times as you need it.
